States of Matter
Solids- a state of matter that has it's own shape and size
Examples of solids are a book, a desk, a tree, a rock, and a door.
Liquids- a state of matter that has it's own volume but can change shape
Examples of liquids are water, lemonade, gasoline, honey, rain, and soda.
Gases- a state of matter that can change it's shape and size
Examples of gases are wind, air, oxygen, helium, smoke, and breath.
Mixture - a combination of two or more substances that can be separated
Examples of mixtures are trail mix, a bag of skittles, and a coin collection.
Solution- a mixture in which one substance dissolves in another
Examples of solutions are lemonade, fruit punch, and cake batter.
Changing between states of matter
Melt- when a solid changes to a liquid by adding heat
Freeze- when a liquid changes to a solid by taking away heat
Evaporate- when a liquid changes to a gas by adding heat
Condensate- when a gas changes to a liquid by taking away heat
